How to Tell Real Jade from Fake
A Buyer’s Guide to Authentic Type A Jade
The 5 Tests for Real Jade
You can test jade at home without any special equipment. These five tests will help you tell authentic jadeite from common imitations.
The Temperature Test
Real jade feels cool to the touch and warms slowly. Fake jade (glass, plastic, dyed stone) warms quickly in your palm. Hold it for 3–5 seconds; if it stays cool, that's a good sign.
The Sound Test
Tap two jade pieces together. Real jade produces a clear, high-pitched ring. Plastic or glass makes a dull thud. Two genuine bangles chime together with a musical tone.
The Light Test
Hold the piece up to bright light. Authentic jadeite shows natural, slightly uneven internal structure — not perfectly uniform. Mass-produced fakes often look too consistent or have bubbles.
The Weight Test
Real jade is denser than most imitations. It should feel heavier than it looks for its size. Glass can feel similar, but plastic will feel noticeably light.
The Scratch Test (last resort)
Real jadeite (Mohs hardness 6.5–7) will not be scratched by a steel knife. However, avoid this test on finished jewelry — use other tests first. A real jade bangle should scratch steel, not the other way around.
Types of Jade — What Treatment Type Means
When jewelers and collectors talk about “Type A, B, or C jade,” they are describing how the stone was treated — not its quality grade.
Type A Jade
✓ What we sellNatural, untreated jadeite. No chemical enhancement, no polymer filling. The highest quality designation. This is the only type we sell at JadeLuxe4petite.
Type B Jade
AvoidBleached with acid to remove impurities, then injected with polymer resin. Looks whiter/greener initially but degrades over time.
Type C Jade
AvoidDyed to enhance or change color. Color fades and is purely cosmetic. Not genuine.
What About Grade A, A+, A++?
Our grading (A / A+ / A++) refers to the quality tier of natural Type A jade — not its treatment type. All of our pieces are Type A (untreated). The grade reflects color saturation, translucency, and uniformity:
Beautiful natural jade, slight color variation, classic icy green
Richer translucency and more even green tone, collector-quality
Exceptional saturation and clarity, heirloom pieces
All grades at JadeLuxe4petite are genuine Type A jadeite — untreated and authenticated before purchase.
Why It Matters for Petite Buyers
Bangles sized for petite wrists (50–54mm inner diameter) are harder to find, which unfortunately means some sellers cut corners on material quality to offer cheaper options. At JadeLuxe4petite, every piece is hand-selected by Tyfani — a Vietnamese-American jade enthusiast who has spent years learning to identify authentic pieces. Each set comes with our personal guarantee of authenticity.
